      From Bob Jordan's "Lindsey Book":
At the present time, John Lindsey has been traced to 1800 Rutherford Co. NC. Deed, census, and tax records have traced his move to Warren Co. KY in 1809, with his probable brother Caleb Lindsey. Tax records showed he moved to Grayson Co. KY about 1820. He then moved to Butler Co. KY in 1824 and stayed only a few years. Apparently, the two oldest sons of Caleb and John left KY for the Indiana Illinois area in 1828 to explore land opportunities. Caleb and John's families then moved up the road to Spencer Co. IN (about a three day ride) in 1829. This is where the two brothers split. Caleb took his family down the Ohio River to a landing in Illinois where he settled in Jackson County. Many of John's sons returned to Butler Co. KY after John died. Perhaps the climate and fanning opportunities were not good in Spencer Co., but I have a feeling they just longed for the home turf of their younger, perhaps happier years. Other sons of John stayed in Spencer Co., IN. That is why I was born in Indiana.
We know John Lindsey married a Terry (?) by 1800. John Lindsey was located in the 1800 Rutherford Co. census with no children. His first child was born 1801, so John was probably married just before the census was taken in late 1799 or early 1800. After John died in 1837, his wife Terry Lindsey was listed in the 1840 census of Spencer Co. IN. One deed record in Butler Co. KY in 1826 listed John's wife as Terry also. Then on the death certificate of James Lindsey, their son, mentioned her name as Therisa no maiden name. The marriage could have taken place in either Spartanburg Co. SC or Rutherford Co. NC. The different family members are each noted by a number. For instance, John Lindsey's number is 1. His first born is 11, and his second born is 12. The first born of 11 is 111, and the first born of 12 is 121. This may be a little clumsy because as the number of generations increase, the larger an individual's number becomes, but we can also quickly find the relationship between generations from one person to another."
Grave stone found by Kenneth Lindsey 1972 Oak Hill Cemetery. The stone was not found by this author on a trip there in 1974. Age brackets in census records below show John was born 1775 80.

1800 Rutherford Co. NC page 125 (alphabetical): John Lindsey 00100 00100. Shows age 16 26 and wife same age bracket, no children thus married 1799 1800 and born 1774 84.

John Lindsey moved to Warren Co. KY by August, 1808, proved by the birth of their son James Lindsey. James' birthplace was always listed in the census records as Kentucky.

Warren Co. KY Tax lists: Caleb Lindsey first appeared 1809 with 122a on Green River, which had been patented by J. Lambert. He had one tax poll 21 or over, none under 21, none 16 21, 2 horses and no slaves. There was no tax book for 1810, but in 1811 John Lindsey appeared with the same 122a and exactly the same "other" information. This was an original patent by J. Lambert. It is not clear if Caleb gave the land to John, allowed him to use the land as long as he paid tax, or if John's name was John Caleb Lindsey. Census records do show both Caleb and John in 1810 Warren Co. John was also taxed for another 100a which had been patented by Philip Jones. John was not taxed on the extra 100a in 1812. The 122a was listed as entered by J. Lambert and patented by Philip Jones. Deed records show the 100a was sold by Caleb (of Grayson Co.) to David Simmons (on Little Beaver Dam). The 122a was taxed under John's name through 1819. The 100a was probably taxed under Simmons’ name. In 1819, John was also shown as being taxed on 305a in Grayson Co. on Bar (Bear?) Creek, which proves where he went.

1820 John disappeared from Warren Co. tax records. John moves to Grayson Co. KY 1816, but poll tax was paid in both counties between 1816 19. The same land appears on both tax records so this gives continuity toward the proof this is the same person.
