Below is the obituary read at Granny's funeral. I had to take out the parts about her nieces and nephews for the paper. Even with me paying an outrageous amount I was still limited to what I could and could not say. I also had to change some of the wording so that there wasn't so many of them.

Margaret: My wife is Betty Sue Freeman Evans. When she was a little
girl she remembers a lady, whose last name she thinks was Meyer from
Denver, Col., visited their home in Phil Campbell, AL gathering
information for a book she was preparing on the Lindsey/McClurken family.
She heard later that the lady was killed in a car accident. She is
interested in gathering more information. Her mother was Martha Jane Nix
(b. Feb. 1888) and was married to Wallace F. Freeman. Martha Jane Nix's
mother was Lucinda Catherine Lindsey (b. 11 Dec. 1859 in Tishomingo Co.
MS) who married Thomas Ezekiel Nix. Can you help us?

My wife Betty is a retired teacher. I am a retired accountant and taught
at the University of North Alabama after retiring.

66 Emma Turnage died in Shreveport, LA at Gowan Hospital (Mom says "Oschner Hospital"). She had TB and had gone there for treatment. Her obituary was in the Oct 18, 1945 Monroe Journal on the front page. She had developed TB early in her marrriage, and since they couldn't afford to move to Arizona, as her doctor recommended, she spent most of one summer outdoors - even sleeping outside.

Various one of her nieces would often come to spend 1-3 months with the family.

Emma Clifton Turnage was called "Cliffie" and was also called "Aunt Bill," by some of her nieces & nephews. Dad didn't know why.

She was very active in the Baptist church.
==================================================================================
Another researcher whose mother died of TB in a Shreveport sanitarium, called Pines, found out that the state destroyed all records of that
hospital in 1980. It is possible that this also applies to Gowan/Oschner.

Letter to A.G. Waldrop, Jefferson County, Alabama, Jonesborrough P.O.
From :

Bay Springs, Mississippi
29 Jul 1847

Dear Cousin:
I take my pen in hand to let you know that we are all well at present. Hoping these few lines may find you all well. I received your letter dated March the 19th, which gave me great satisfaction to hear that you was all well and doing well. You will please excuse my long delay of writing to you.
The connection is all well as far as I know. Crops is tolerable good. Corn is scarce. Old corn is worth 75 per bushel, bacon 10 to 12, wheat $1 per bushel. I want to hear from you all, Uncle Robert and Aunt Nancy, Uncle Zachariah and Aunt Hester, and Aunt Jane McClurken, and all of my cousins. Tell them that I would be glad to see them al
James Lindsey is before the people for a seat in the State Legislature. Brother Carrol and David Franklin is merchandising. Wm. C. Lindsey has been twice to Louisvillle, Ky. to buy goods. B.L. Lindsey is teaching school and I finished laying cotton yesterday. We have had two children since I wrote you before, one is a boy and the other a girl. They are 9 months old. We call the boy John Micajah, and the girl Nancy Lavina. We think they are very smart and pretty.
My dear cousin give my respects to all of the connection in that part of the country. Tell them that I would be glad to hear from them all when I write to one I write to all. I would be glad to hear from them [Meyer says "see you all"] and converse with you face to face, but as we live in different parts of the country, we can all write or have it done. Any of you can write better than I can, let me hear from you all and where you all live.
I understand that Cousin Samuel Waldrop has moved somewhere in this state. If so let me know where he is so that I can write to him and learn how he is doing. Mother wants to see you all very bad.
We had two barbecues in this neighborhood for the purpose of celebrating the fourth of July. One was on the 3rd and the other the 6th. They was both very well managed and good order prevailed throughout. The celebration was opened by prayer then the declaration read and a very appropriate address was made by Dr. Robert Morrow. He give the anti-war party thunder.
I must come to a close, so no more at present but still remai
truly yours,
Holland Lindsey

In a letter to B. S. Lindsey in Baltimore, dated 23 Jul 1910, John Micajah Lindsey said that Holland was born in SC and then moved with his family first to middle TN (when he was 3 years old), to AL "when he was only a plow boy" and finally to Mississippi, where he "raised his family consisting of five boys and three girls."

Goodspeed's History of Itawamba County, Mississippi (1891)

From: Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi, Embracing an Authentic
and Comprehensive Account of the Chief Events in the History of the State and a
Record of the Lives of Many of the Most Worthy and Illustrious Families and
Individuals. Vol. 1. Chicago: Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1891.

From: Chapter XII. Counties of the Chickasaw Cession. pp. 252-253.

All that part of the Chickasaw bordering on the Tombigbee river was called Monroe, and February 9, 1836, Itawamba was formed out of that territory and organized into a county, embracing about half of what is now Lee county, and part of Prentiss and Tishomingo counties.

The town of Fulton, the county seat, situated on the east bank of the Tombigbee, was laid off in 1836, and Charles Warren was elected the first sheriff; Louis Gideon, probate clerk; C. H. Ritchie, probate judge; R. O. Beene, circuit clerk. The first board of supervisors met in September, 1836; J. S. Bourland was elected president. The other members were A. G. Lane, John Beene, S. S. Sperman and E. Allen.

It is possible that the first white man to visit and settle in this section was Isaac Edwards in 1827. He was soon followed by J. S. Bourland, Everett Sheffield, John and Alfred Dulaney, M. Harrison, Reuben Wiygul, H. Jamison, >>>>Holland Lindsey<<<<, Jacob Green, Dorn Patton, Charles Warren, >>>>Josiah Lindsey<<<<, E. G. Thomas, Samuel Bell, Ed. Lesley, all now dead. J. Robins and M. C. Cummings, still living, were among the first settlers in 1836. The land sales took place at Pontotoc and the county rapidly settled up.

The Tombigbee river runs through the county from north to south, and numerous crreeks afford fine water power. There are several earthenware factories and some wool carding mills in the county. The river furnishes transportation during part of the year. Much of county is finely timbered. Some timber is being rafted out by the river. The principal varieties growing here are the oaks, pine, hickory, maple, beech, walnut, gum and cypress. This is a hilly county, with fertile valleys, and the chief products are corn, cotton, fruits of all kinds, oats and some wheat. The county abounds in good water from never-failing springs. Many fine streams run into the Tombigbee in this county.

Hi Judy,

Hope all is well with you and yours.

I just have come into contact with some 2nd cousins, descendents of Thomas
Carroll lindsey and Belinda Caroline Williams. If I remember right, My g.
grandfather, T.C. Lindsey was brother to your ancestor, John Micajah Linsey,
and they married sisters, Belinda Caroline Williams and Sarah Ansalane
Williams.

These cousins have provided a maiden name for the William's girls mother.
From the 1850 census we have their parents names as Aaron M. Williams and
Margaret.
I guess their full names were Aaron Manship Williams and Margaret BIRDSONG.
I found these cousins when one posted to Ancestry.com. His Lindsey line
isn't correct but that is where I found Margaret' maiden name.

I haven't found out how they know that her maiden name was Birdsong yet.
We've been to busy swapping family stories. I refered them to your web site
for more information on the Lindsey's.

Just thought I'd pass on this new tidbit.. Who knows, it may lead to more
information.

Take Care.

94 Hi,
My husband is a decendent of Mary Tyrena Lindsey, daughter of James and Rachel Franklin Lindsey.
Mary married Alfred Richard Senter and moved to Freestone County, Texas, where they both are buried. Their daughter Ada Maude Senter married Eugene Thomas Harris, grandfather of my husband, Lester Thomas Harris, Jr.
I haven't read all of your information to know if you already have this info, but will be happy to share anything that I have. Most of the info on the Lindsey's came from DAR records, and cannot always be taken for truth, but the later records I know from family records.

I'm so excited that I found this web site. I have been tracing Harris family and that is very hard.

Thanks,

98 I just was looking at your Great-Grandchildren of Micajah C. Lindsey page in Rootsweb. There is some information I have which you don't have listed there.

None of this is exactly verified by census records, wills, etc. It's mostly information passed down to me on the backs of envelopes by my father.

Children of Bassel Lee Lindsey and Mary Ann Shelton:

Frederick Holland Lindsey, b. 1860 [Presumed to be the H. F. Lindsey, b. 1860, mentioned in 1870, Tippah Co., MS pg. 239 (Ripley)] He married Mary Francis (Lily) Wilson. Had at least five children. I have some names of the children.

George W. Lindsey, b. 1863 (He settled in Texas. I don't believe he ever married. At least he had no children. Died 1918, Sour Lake, TX)

Thomas Lindsey, b. 1866
--- Lindsey, b. 1866
Virginia Lou Ella Lindsey, b. December 1866

(My father always said that his mother...Virginia...was one of triplets, the other two died at birth or else very early on. I'm assuming these are the triplets but wouldn't swear to these names. I know my grandmother had twin sons, so multiples seem to run in the family.)

Luke Pryor Lindsey, b. 1869 He married a woman whose last name was Burke and they had a daughter, Mary Jo Lindsey, who married O. J. Hite. This was near Uniontown, Ky.

Benjamin Shelton Lindsey, b. Jan. 22, 1871 (Lived in Baltimore and then Terre Haute, Ind.) Had five children - I have their names.

Mary Lee Lindsey (I am under the impression that she was younger than my grandmother, Virginia) She married James Griffen.

Sally Lindsey (Perhaps she was one of the triplets?)

I grew up hearing my father talk about Uncle Fred, Uncle George, Uncle Pryor, Uncle Ben, and Aunt Mary Lee. I have met Uncle Ben personally.
